Today In Depressing News; Will Smith To Star In Men In Black 3

In news that should really shock no one, Will Smith is on board for Men in Black III, reports Deadline New York.  The movie is slated to be released in 2012.  While I’m not surprised, I’m definitely disappointed.  The first Men in Black was a fun movie.  It had an interesting and unique plot, some decent action scenes, and it was even funny.  I remember cracking up way back in 1997 at all of the training scenes.  The second MIB was a complete waste of time.

I think Will Smith is a really good actor, yet he consistently turns up in mind-blowingly generic blockbusters (I Am Legend, Hancock, etc.).  Why?  Does Will Smith really need the money?  Why not balance out the big-budget stuff with smaller, more nuanced roles?  He’s shown he’s capable of gripping dramatic performances in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness.  But those have been the only straight dramas he’s attempted (excluding 7 Pounds).  I guess I shouldn’t be complaining, though.  At least he’s not trying to be a rapper anymore.
